Did you know that your skin is more than just a covering that keeps your “insides” from being on the “outside”? Skin is actually a complex organ that helps get rid of toxins through perspiration, and can also absorb substances–both good and bad–that get carried through your bloodstream and passed through all your organs. That’s how medication patches work, and why we’re warned against prolonged skin contact with substances like gasoline.

But, you can use this property to your advantage by using only healthy, wholesome products on your skin. Keep in mind that putting a substance on your skin is almost a weak version of eating that substance; some of it is going to get absorbed by your bloodstream and passed through your body.

When you think of that, it only makes sense to follow the advice that, “If you wouldn’t eat it, don’t put it on your skin!”

Goat milk is one of the most nutritious, wholesome foods available. Goat milk has also been used for thousands of years in both its fresh and fermented states as a beauty and skin care product.

While cow’s milk provides some of the same benefits, there are subtle differences.

First, the fat molecules in goat milk contain significantly larger amounts of medium chain fatty acids, known as capric, caprylic and caproic acids. These molecules are smaller than in cow’s milk, helping it to remain, to a large degree, naturally homogenized within the milk.

The larger proportion of shorter chain fatty acids as compared to cow’s milk, combined with the smaller size, makes the fat in goat milk more accessible to being absorbed by the skin.

Concerning protein, goat milk also differs in that it contains more shorter strand proteins, making it easily absorbed by the skin. This greater absorption property of fat and protein helps leave skin smooth and supple.

Finally, goat milk is rich in many vitamins and minerals that are absorbed through the skin along with the fat and protein. Vitamin A, of which goat milk contains about 47% more than cow’s milk, is particularly important to skin health.

While milk baths are one of the easiest and most popular categories of skin care recipes, there are other easy, inexpensive ways to use dairy products to improve your skin’s health.

Fermented products, such as yogurt, kefir and buttermilk contain lactic acid, which is a type of alpha-hydroxy acid commonly used in commercial skin care products as an exfoliant. These fermented products, either alone or combined with other natural ingredients like fresh fruits, make excellent facial masks that have the ability to moisturize, exfoliate and tighten skin.

And, the whey from these products, which is easily obtained by letting them drain through cheesecloth overnight, makes an excellent facial toner and rinse for hair.

Finally, goat milk soap and lotion provide a gentle, moisturizing basis for a daily skin care regimen. The lactose helps produce a creamy, luxurious lather that is unlike any other kind of soap, and the extra fat content from the milk ensures a gentleness that won’t dry skin.

So, the next time your skin is dry and thirsty, give it nutrients–not chemicals–to quench that thirst!

Maria Garza began raising dairy goats in 2001 as part of a diversified, small-scale farm that also included horses, donkeys, sheep, chickens and ducks. Initially interested more in the goats themselves, she was soon amazed by the quality and taste of the milk they produced.

Being by profession a scientific researcher, she put her research skills to use on goat milk, learning not only how to process it and make delicious cheeses and other products, but also about the chemical and nutritional properties. The findings convinced her that goat milk is truly an amazing nutritional substance that’s vastly under-utilized in providing nourishment in Western society.

I read every book there is about soap making at least three times before I had the courage to make any soap. Actually I did not gather up the courage to make soap until I met someone who was a soap maker. She actually invited me to here house and once I saw her making soap, I realized I could make soap for myself.

In this article I will be talking about making goat milk soap, but the process is the same for any soap that you make. So even if you want to make something that is not a milk soap, this process will work for you too. As we walk through it together you will see how simple it is.

There are 3 different ways to make goat milk soap. The first way will be with goat milk powder, but you can also use can goat milk and fresh goat milk. To get started you going to need oats, a blender, a scale and a sifter. You will also need the goat milk powder, fragrance, a stainless steel pot and a plastic measuring container. Never mix in anything other than stainless steel or glass.

A huge tapered edge glass container, a couple of thermometers, and a few scooping utensils for getting the oils into the mixing container. A stick blender will make the process faster and also the more important vinegar, this will be necessary if you have any spills it will help neutralize the lye that you are working with which is caustic. It can make a chemical burn if it spills on your skin, so the vinegar is used to neutralize that situation.

One of the unanswered questions that I had when I started making soap was how many bars of soap is the recipe that I have in my hands going to make? Well it all depends on the mold you will be using. Some molds allow you to make a huge block of soap that you can then cut into smaller pieces.

Do you have dry skin? Some people with dry skin suffer with continual scaling and dryness causing them to itch while maintaining an overall uncomfortable feeling. Goat milk soaps can help dry skin sufferers. These handcrafted natural soaps are super mild, gentle and very moisturizing. Do you have oily skin, blemishes or acne? Since this soap is super mild it does not irritate blemishes or acne but, instead, gently cleanses. Most commercial soaps and toners are too harsh and end up irritating blemishes and acne making it worse. This handcrafted natural soap is sold to a lot of acne sufferers and they have great success with it!

Goat milk soap is so mild and gentle it can, even, be used on the face. Research shows that most commercial soaps are not buffered. This means that the pH of the commercial soaps are so far from the pH of the skin that it takes an average of two hours, after being exposed to these soaps, for the skin to return to its normal pH level. Goat milk is a buffer. This means it has a pH very close to that of human skin, so when you use soap with a high percentage of goat milk the pH of your skin does not change very much. Your skin does not take all of that time to recover. Some people have avoided using all soaps on their face because the facial skin is thin and very sensitive, but these handcrafted natural soaps offer an alternative to those harsh commercial soaps, even those that are specifically advertised as face products.

Commercial soaps can leave a soapy build-up around the tub or shower. They can leave a mushy mess for you to clean. This is not the case with goat milk soaps. This soap lasts much longer than regular commercial soaps, using a well-drained soap dish. The longevity of this soap is, also, dependant upon the ingredients and formula used by the soap maker. Some goat milk soaps may turn soft and only last a couple of weeks while others will last much longer. The extra care and boost of ingredients put into these natural soaps, by the soap maker, is proof of a high quality product that last longer.

These handcrafted soaps are offered with fragrances derived from natural extracts or some have no fragrance at all. Some fragrances include: Lavender, Peppy Citrus, Orange Tree, Peppermint Coffee, Aloe & Oats and more. There is an unscented soap called “Au Natural”. These natural soaps offer distinct characteristics and are good for almost any skin care needs.

Goat milk soaps are available as “Seconds”. Seconds offer the same exact skin care benefits as the regular bar soaps, the only difference is that Seconds have imperfections or minor flaws. Some of these flaws could consist of a slightly shaved edge, shop worn, a torn label, etc….Buying Seconds offers a money saving alternative.

These natural soaps are available in a variety of fragrances and unscented.
